It’s December 27th, and I’m at work.

I really enjoy my job from the fun atmosphere and the smart and charismatic co-workers (see, Lisa R., Margaret Hegg), all the way to the wide variety of clients we have. One of the only glaring downsides is the fact that it remains open between Christmas and New Years. Although I was out drinking a tall one with some advertising peers last night, they are at home relaxing while I’m at work today. At least I’m used to it, my last agency was open during this week as well!

The bright side of this is that I’ve gotten up-to-date on some filing, caught up on the trades, and although I have a million more urgent things to do, they can take the back burner since no one else in the agency world is at work. Smooth! And lucky for you, I’m taking my lunch to write you a blog.

In the spirit of feeling like I want to be a slacker this week even though I can’t, I’ve decided I don’t want to be serious until the official start of 2008. It looks like other, more seasoned industry bloggers feel the same. :)

The ClickZ post, “10 Most Cynical Online Predictions” nearly knocked me off my cushy chair with LOLs. In it, Dorian Sweet (jokingly?) predicts the following:

“Time” magazine will follow up its 2006 Person of the Year designation,”You,” which featured a mirror on its cover, by inserting a Sony PSP player into each magazine and give the 2008 award to “who you used to be before you became antisocial.”

This prediction makes me think about my social life as well as professional. Just last night, a very tech-savvy friend apologized for being anti-social. He blamed his reclusion on his abundance of home gadgets ranging from a well-equipped Wii to a giant HDTV. Then I step in to work today and read today’s Mediapost Research Brief about social networking. This article on social networking refers to actually ties Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to social networking and how businesses can use this channel to make real connection to their audience. If our our basic and advanced social needs are being met by social networking, are we really becoming less social, or are we just evolving?

While my personal dependence on the Internet increases daily, it’s not surprising that others in my generation would be experiencing the same thing, but 2008 is the year it is predicted to become straight up MASS. eMarketer just reported that social network spending may increase as much as 70% as the overall audience grows and broadens. I’m excited to see what kind of wacky things Myspace and Facebook will throw at users and advertisers in 2008. Or will 2008 give rise to social network fragmentation? I’m on the edge of my seat.

My savvy blog-mate Lisa asked me to make this post pretty so I’m putting the cutest thing up I have on hand. Cheers to Pepper – the greatest dog in the world!

Have a happy New Year everyone!
